Visit to Tekserve
Today the Girls Club went to Tekserve. At Tekserve they work specifically with Apple products and Mac computers. They do everything from fixing & replacing parts of computers to selling new ones. Also, they fix & sell things like iPods & iPhones. We got to talk to women that work there. Before working at Tekserve, many of the women’s past jobs dealt with different things. For example, one woman worked with lots of bands as a recording engineer and another woman used to work with graphics and created logos for different companies. All the women ended up at Tekserve for many different reasons, but they all seemed happy with their jobs there. However, many of the women had to deal with men and the negative things they said about the women working at Tekserve. For example, a male customer once said to one of the female workers, “You’re too pretty to know about computers.” I think it doesn’t matter whether or not it’s a female or male working, as long as they know about their jobs and what they’re doing. When the women face discrimination, everyone, including the men, were all supportive of each other. They said that they liked their jobs because it was a very friendly and family-like environment. They especially like their jobs because of the passion they have for technology and the benefits there are to working there. For instance, they get their birthday off but still get paid for that day. We also learned how to fill out an application. All you really have to do is be honest and answer the questions with the confidence. It’s better to say you don’t know the answer to a question than lie and act like you do. The ladies also mentioned that confidence is key for working in general. The most important thing that I learned was that no matter if there are more boys than girls in a field, don’t put yourself down and put your all into whatever you do.
