Career Week: Shearman & Sterling Law Firm
![]()
Today the Girls Club visited a law firm on 53rd Street and Lexington Ave called Shearman & Sterling. I thought that it was a great experience. A few of the female lawyers spoke about their lives briefly and how they grew up and how they got to where they are now. One woman named Barbra was born in Ghana and came all the way to New York City. She then went to Brooklyn College and then NYU Law. There was another woman named Laura and she lived in New York all her life except for when she went to College. There was another woman named Veronica, she was a sweet woman. She was born handicapped and the doctor recommended that her mother should put her in a state institution but her mother said no and Veronica was very grateful for that. She lived in Idaho and applied for Harvard and she got in! After she applied to college, she moved to New York by herself. She said that it was very scary because she really didn’t know many people, and she was handicapped, and she had no family in NY. I think her story was great and that she is a great role model. She even told us that if she can do it than we can do it too. It was nice because I learned that you can really do anything that you set your mind to. I know that people say it all the time but now I really see that it is possible.
